What is wheelchair rugby?

Wheelchair rugby (formerly known as quad rugby) is a sport that has been introduced in 1993 in Holland. Currently there are circa 8 teams participating in the Dutch competition. Wheelchair rugby is a Paralympic sport.

Wheelchair rugby has been influenced by basketball, ice hockey and rugby. It is played with two teams of 4 players each. A match consists of four periods of eight minutes actual playing time. In contrast to wheelchair basketball, in wheelchair rugby it is allowed to have wheelchair contact. This often leads to spectacular situations.
